Catapult Building

Building a catapult with your team

In this workshop you and your team will build a Mega Catapult. This can be done with poles and rubber bands but we can also do it with mechanical energy. If you like a technically complex challenge, then choose the extended variant: designing and building a pendulum catapult, or spoonblade.

Which design is the best and which catapult will be built? Which team will finish the construction first and can start shooting the other team?

Interaction

What qualities are on your team today?

Designs

Who has a good idea and can also explain the details?

Competition

Will you beat the other team in the competition during the final game?

Transforming with wood string

Pioneering with simple building materials: wooden poles and ropes. Where the workshop focuses mainly on the participants and their problem-solving skills. After the instruction, teams are made and each team gets its own set of materials to work with. Can you transform that pile of wood into a working instrument?

The assignment
Design and build a sturdy structure With which you can achieve the goal. And then prove it in a mutual competition! This involves creativity, leadership and decisiveness. Meanwhile, fun is guaranteed!

Building pendulum catapult (spoonblade)

The hurling catapult, or spoonblade, was the most destructive artillery weapon in the Middle Ages. It was used to hurl projectiles against or over castle walls, for example. It uses mechanical energy.

With good design and execution, can you repeat this and beat the other teams?

Back to basic
With extra thick wooden poles of up to 3 meters in length, various constructions can be built. Teams are given 1.5 hours to do this.

Pioneering: from nothing to something
It starts with a design on paper and building a prototype with the lightweight bamboo sticks. In the next phase, the team gets down to the real work! For this, the necessary knots are first taught. Once everyone has practiced the mast throw, lashing and winding in several variations, they can start working independently.

Alternatives available
Various versions of a catapult, trebuchet and/or spoonblade are available. Which solution will the team come up with?

Need extra challenge?
We can add various game elements to the assignment as desired.
